Loyalty to the lie

Research has supposedly shown that conservatives are more loyal than liberals. I suspect that the problem is a bias in the object of loyalty. Conservatives may be more loyal to their tribe, while liberals are more loyal to their ideals.

In any case, conservatives have certainly proven loyalty to their favored lies and the liars who continue to propagate them long after they've been conclusively refuted:

Not long ago, if you told a whopper like [Sarah] Palin's and it was as thoroughly debunked as hers was, that would have ended the discussion. These days, it is barely even part of the discussion. These days, facts seem overmatched by falsehood, too slow to catch them, too weak to stop them.
Indeed, falsehoods are harder to kill than a Hollywood zombie. Run them through with fact, and still they shamble forward, fueled by echo chamber media, ideological tribalism, cognitive dissonance, a certain imperviousness to shame, and an understanding that a lie repeated long enough, loudly enough, becomes, in the minds of those who need to believe it, truth.
That is the lesson of the birthers and truthers, of Sen. Jon Kyl's "not intended to be a factual statement" about Planned Parenthood, of Glenn Beck's claim that conservatives founded the Civil Rights Movement, and of pretty much every word Michele Bachmann says. It seems that not only are facts no longer important, but they are not even the point.
Rather, the point is the construction and maintenance of an alternate narrative designed to enhance and exploit the receiver's fears, his or her sense of prerogatives, entitlement, propriety and morality under siege from outside forces.

The strangest aspect of persistent lying is that it exacts no penalty from the credibility of the liars. In a nation with truth as a social norm, Palin, Beck, Kyl, and Bachmann would long since have been laughed out of the national conversation.

Because wingnuts clamor to be lied to and the media no longer care about anything other than eyeballs on their ads, we are a nation on the path to failure. It may already be too late to rescue the greatness of America from its self-professedly loyal destroyers.

Living a lie will do that to you.

Ignorance is bliss

This cartoon, which attempts irony, explains a lot about the Teapublican view of ignorance as no big deal. How ironic.

Even if it hurts their feelings

How to get bullshit out of our discourse?  Mock, rinse, repeat:

Mock. Point. Laugh. State facts. Satirize. Call a lie, a lie. Mock again. Laugh again.  Point to facts again. Repeat. Repeat again. Repeat yet again, until everyone thinks twice before ever uttering anything so destructive, ignorant and idiotic in public.

How more people skewering right-wing falsehoods would not lead to a better world escapes me.
Michael Lind is a good guy, but he's just wrong when he calls on liberals not to mock Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and Michele Bachmann.  Mockery is one of our most potent weapons.

We need to raise the price to be paid for stupid bullshit.  We ought to be embarrassing them with their own lack of good sense.  Every damn time.

The Teapublican brand should mean stupid, illiterate, lying tripe.

Civil warfare

I still say that truth is more important than civility.

Under siege but not alone

[F]alse belief in weapons of mass-destruction led the United States to a trillion-dollar war. And trust in rising home value as a truism as reliable as a sunrise was a major contributor to the catastrophic collapse of the economy. At its worst extreme, a culture of misinformation can produce something like Iran, which is run by a Holocaust denier.
Why aren't members of the "flat-earth wing" of the GOP angry at their propagandists for such bald lies to them? Because they prefer those lies to the real truth.

The question I see in this: Are these wingnuts going to wake up with a wicked bullshit hangover some day soon, or will our nation grow more polarized to the point where they believe they need to prove their favored lies by force?

Disarmament in the bullshit wars

Gene Lyons:

Time was when a journalist dissembling about his own recorded words, for heaven's sake, would have fallen into disgrace and out of a job. At the provincial level, that's still true. I'd expect to be sacked for such egregious misbehavior, which, possessing a sense of honor, I'd never imitate.

For the national political press, those days ended during President Clinton's first term. Much of the "mainstream" media now operates by Hollywood rules: Stardom brings big money and freedom from accountability. So long, that is, as one can avoid offending the Soviet-style propaganda apparatus that's arisen on the Republican far right.

But no, "both sides" don't do it. Berated for years about "liberal bias," many otherwise sensible citizens don't understand that for better and worse, the Democrats have nobody like Andrew Breitbart or Glenn Beck.

Safe bet

If wingnut commentators are selling it, chances are good that it's borderline fraudulent.

What's their stock in trade? Outrage, fear, and bullshit. Hard to make a rational investment decision in the throes of even one of those...

No excuse too lame

Teabaggers showed their bigotry openly because Nancy Pelosi walked softly and carried a big gavel. When they advocate personal responsibility, they're advocating it for us.

The proud stupid

This is what we're up against: Glenn Beck mocking, among others, John Lewis, for "comparing themselves to civil rights activists."

The truth will never penetrate Beck's audience. They aren't interested in learning. They simply want confirmation that they aren't racist, even if the rationalization that proves it to their satisfaction is transparently bullshit and in fact proves the contrary.

Liberal media

The New York Times bends so far over backward to spin these wingnut wannabe junior Watergaters as "activists" that they could kiss their own asses if they just had Linda Blair's neck. To hear the alleged journalists at the Times tell it, these guys are just journalists gone slightly awry:

At least three of the men charged in the episode have backgrounds in campus journalism.

...

Mr. O’Keefe has long espoused a form of journalism that draws attention to itself.
Just pretexting their way into a Senator's phone system! What a bunch of cards! They just needed more attention. At least they weren't stinking bloggers!

All of the people the Times quotes in response are conservatives:
  • Michelle Malkin
  • Glenn Beck
  • the so-called Leadership Institute
  • a blogger at the Corner
  • and one of O'Keefe's old fellow cub distorters from Rutgers
There is no excuse for an article this slanted. Even Fox would have leavened it with something it pretended was a liberal point of view. Reporters Campbell Robertson and Liz Robbins need to be on the police beat at the Post. The New York Post.
